theatre, Yoga, & Community engagement
Vero's work as a teaching artist is the intersection where theatre, yoga, and community organization meet. Vero holds a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification from CorePower Yoga on a scholarship. She has taught Vinyasa Flow Yoga classes at The Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center on DePaul University's Campus. In addition to be being a yoga instructor, Vero is the Former Community Engagement Coordinator at CorePower, Roscoe Village. Through this position, Vero has made yoga more accessible by offering free events to neighboring communities. Projects as Community Engagement Coordinator include Pop-Up Yoga at Ward 47, a summer-long, outdoor yoga event and The Theatre School Community Yoga Event, a free event private to those affiliated with The Theatre School at DePaul University. Vero's yoga practice is informed by her movement studies at The Theatre School, notably Bartenieff Fundamentals, The Feldenrkrais Method, and a two-week aerials intensive with The Actor's Gymnasium. Vero's personal relationship with Moderate Scoliosis also informs her practice, encouraging her students to work mindfully and with the quirks of their bodies, rather than against them. The majority of Vero's theatrical teaching artistry has taken root in the form of workshops. Most recently, Vero facilitated The 5-Day Theatre & Humanity Workshop that was free to non-theatre majors at DePaul University and ran the course of October 2018. Other workshops that Vero has led have been sponsored by Reyburn Middle School in Clovis, CA and Berkeley United In Literacy Development, or BUILD. Topics covered in these workshops include: gender inequity in education and how to integrate theatre into literacy tutoring. With BUILD, Vero also served as a literacy tutor for three years and, for two years, she served as the Director of the after school literacy tutoring programs at Young Adult Project (YAP) and Bay Area Hispano Institute for Advancement (BAHIA). While at YAP and BAHIA, her team predominantly worked with students of color from under-resourced backgrounds. A mathematician in a past life, Vero also has 7 years of experience working as a freelance, private math tutor, teaching elementary school students and undergraduates alike. Nowadays, Vero is an audition coach. And recently taught as a Program Assistant to the Directing Concetration of The Theatre School's Summer High School Program.
